The works are the original painting illustrations on Michelle Van Eimeren-Alcasid’s children's book “Butterfly”.
“Butterfly”
is a story of a caterpillar named Clarissa who tries to find her place
in the world. As she travels, she encounters life’s different
adventures and misadventures.
As Clarissa undergoes
metamorphosis, she then experiences realities - failure, fear, happiness
and hope. Until finally, she becomes a butterfly and finds her way back
to where she belongs - to her family.
As the illustrator,
I was given the freedom to create and interpret the story. Through simple
and direct images, I tried to capture the essence of each character
and bring about life to the story’s visual play in a humorous
and childlike tone.
With my background
in painting, I decided to choose oil on canvass. Aside from familiarity
with the medium, oil exudes timeless appearance in color.
In “ILLUSTRATIONS,”
the composition displays the artist’s graphic view, playfulness
in color, and passion in line and brush-strokes - mature elements on
childish surface.
